Project Overview

Monitoring Aquatic Native Fish Habitat
Thirtymile Steelhead Productivity Monitoring

Planning/Design
Thirtymile Creek, a tributary of the Lower Mainstem John Day River and primarily located in Gilliam County near Condon is a major steelhead spawning area. Thirtymile Creek is a high priority summer steelhead recovery, protection and/or restoration benefit area in the Lower Mainstem John Day population. Steelhead life cycle monitoring in Thirtymile Creek, initiated in 2017, provides a basis to evaluate and inform both past and upcoming restoration projects designed to improve steelhead freshwater productivity. This FIP funding request will extend our analytical capacity through 2026 and data collection capacity through 2027 to ensure we maximize return on the monitoring and restoration.

Focal Species

Focal Species

Proposed monitored will work to identify ESA listed steelhead population limiting factors and the physical habitat features contributing to population limiting factors.

Implementation and Ecological Results

Implementation and Ecological Results

Implemented restoration action are expected to increase the habitat suitability of steelhead spawning. We will monitor how implemented restoration has impacted spawning distribution.
We will monitor steelhead response to increased habitat diversity and complexity created through restoration actions.
BDA's are expected to increase floodplain connectivity facilitating natural water retention which is hypothesized to allow for fish rearing across a larger area. We will monitor how BDAs have impacted fish rearing in restored reaches.

Working Groups

Working Groups

Monitoring will occur within the focal area of the Lower John Day Working Group.
