Lower Thirtymile Restoration Design

Planning/Design
The BLM has recently allocated approximately $375,000 for restoration work in the Thirtymile Watershed. This project proposes to develop restoration designs for Thirtymile Creek from RM 0 to RM 10 on BLM lands. The designs will focus on restoration actions identified in the Atlas Prioritization process and consist of engineered and process-based concepts.

Focal Species

Focal Species

Thirtymile Creek is one of two streams listed as (1) highest priority for restoration in the John Day Subbasin Plan for the Lower John Day. It is also a high priority for restoration benefit in the Mid-C Steelhead Recovery Plan.

Implementation and Ecological Results

Implementation and Ecological Results

The designs will explore alternatives to remove existing levees in the project area.
The project reach is already fenced, the design will explore alternatives to prioritize locations for the installing of addition riparian plantings.
Over the long term, increased riparian vegetation would increase streambank shading.
Over the long term increased riparian vegetation would result in increased streambank shading and floodplain connectivity would help reduce elevated stream temperatures.
Process-based restoration and LWD placement would increase habitat diversity, complexity, and structure.

Working Groups

Working Groups

The project will produce designs that will help the Lower John Day Working Group achieve the identified goal of healthy streams and riparian areas that benefit ecology and community. The designs will cover restoration actions that will meet the LJDWG goal one objectives: increase stream flows during critical times, reduce stream temperature at critical times, increase site-capable vegetation, and restore connection to floodplains.
