Project Overview

Basics

Restoration of Aquatic Native Fish Habitat
Little Indian Creek Riparian Fence Project

Planning/Design
Project proposes to construct 2.0 miles of 4-strand wire fence, to improve riparian conditions by restricting livestock access, along 1 mile of Little Indian Creek, a perennial tributary of Indian Creek, a tributary of the Middle Fork John Day River. It provides spawning and rearing habitat for ESA listed summer steelhead. Unrestricted livestock access to the creek and associated riparian areas have degraded site conditions affecting aquatic habitat, water temperatures, and streamside vegetation. The enclosure will allow for streambank stabilization, decreased sediment loads, and allow riparian vegetation to reach natural site potential buffering against stream temperature fluctuations.

Focal Species

Focal Species

Little Indian Creek provides spawning and rearing habitat for ESA listed Mid-C steelhead. By restricting livestock and wildlife impacts to the riparian areas, conditions for salmonids will be improved. Installing and maintaining riparian fencing, is listed as a key restoration action addressing a strategy in the Middle Columbia Steelhead ESA Recovery Plan (NMFS, November 30, 2009).

Implementation and Ecological Results

Implementation and Ecological Results

Project proposed to install and maintain livestock exclusion fencing which will contribute to increased riparian plant communities and increase shading thereby increasing and improving water quality.
