Bull Trout Status and Trend Monitoring
This Project has an Update in progress.
Project Overview
Basics
Bull Trout Status and Trend Monitoring
Implementation
The Middle and North Forks of the John Day River are within the known extent of spawning, rearing, and adult holding habitats of ESA threatened bull trout, yet little is known regarding their abundance, distribution, or population trends. The absence of these data precludes the ability of managing agencies to prioritize restoration or management actions as they relate to bull trout, or to evaluate recovery metrics. To bridge this knowledge gap we are conducting a suite of monitoring actions including spawning surveys, eDNA sampling, occupancy modeling, and snorkel sampling.

Focal Species
Focal Species
Bull trout are the primary subject of this project's efforts, which seek to characterize the distribution, abundance, and ultimately the demographic trends of populations present within the FIP priority watersheds.
Steelhead spawning surveys will be conducted in spring 2020 as part of a collective effort between the Warm Springs Tribes and ODFW to contribute to comprehensive basin-wide datasets. ODFW will be continue to maintain their spawning survey efforts in the upper main-stem John Day river as part of this collaboration.
eDNA samples collected for bull trout distribution monitoring will also be leveraged for multi-species analysis in applicable areas to contribute to the known extent of lamprey within the FIP priority watersheds.
Implementation and Ecological Results
Implementation and Ecological Results
Although these monitoring efforts will not increase spatial distribution of native fishes, they will contribute to the greater body of knowledge concerning distribution, abundances, and population trends.

Notes
11/09/2020 3:14 PM | Stefan Kelly | The bull trout status and trend monitoring effort was originally slated to be implemented during the 2020 field season. The project was not able to be implemented in 2020 due to unforeseen circumstances and consequences experienced by the Warm Springs Tribes as a direct result of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The project has been delayed until 2021, at which point it is intended to be fully implemented per the original protocols and scope of work (as of 11/09/2020). No additional changes are proposed at this time. |
